Helfer is a native of the rural area of Donalda, Alberta, Canada and was the daughter of Dennis Elaine and Dennis Elaine Helfer. Her parents are of German, English and Swedish descent. She attended the William E. Hay Composite High School of Stettler situated in Alberta. Three of her sisters Tammy, Tara and Trena resided and worked on their farm owned by her parents. When she was 17, The agent from her modeling agency noticed her waiting in line in a theatre.
